There are probably an awful lot of things I should have been posting over the past several months, but I have been remiss. For now, I am posting pictures of our garden per request.

I like gardens. They seem like such a miracle to me. I love the way that we can plant, water, tend, and pour as much energy as we like into a garden, but God is the one that causes the growth and makes everything beautiful.

We planted our garden back in May, and it’s the biggest one we’ve ever had. Friends asked to see pictures, thus this post. I wasn't able to get blog-worthy pictures of everything. Not pictured, we have tomatoes, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, watermelon, and squash growing. We also were harvesting romaine lettuce and spinach for several weeks, but those plants have all pretty much gone to seed by now and are no longer producing.

Mom planted these forget-me-nots before we even knew what kind of flower they were. They were beautiful, but unfortunately attracted flies. We had planted them right outside the back door. Needless to say, they are gone now. We enjoyed them while they were there though!
For almost as long as I can remember, I have had a far-off dream of writing a book. Unfortunately, dreams of this kind take commitment, dedication, and lots and lots of hard work. I never truly put my effort into this particular dream of mine, and thus nothing ever came of it. I have a friend, however, who had the same dream, gave it her all, and after three long years of work finally accomplished her goal--and published her very own book. I am so very excited for Tialla in accomplishing such a great task, even before she finished high school.

I enjoyed Holding the Future Hostage immensely. The story is about a teenage girl who holds the balance of the universe in her hands...literally. It is a captivating read, and I found it very difficult to put down. With adventure and suspense filling every one of its pages, there is not a dull moment in the novel. I would highly recommend Tialla's book to any sci-fi adventure lover.
First November, then December with all its delights and memorable moments, and finally the new year have all swiftly slipped away. It reminds me of James 4:14. "What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes." All the more reason to look carefully how we walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time because the days are evil.

I hope that you all had a very lovely and special Christmas celebration this year! Our family certainly did. Christmas time is always my favorite time of the year, and this year was no exception. We did something this year we had never done before. Every night for the month of December (to be perfectly honest I should have to say most nights since I am sorry to admit that we did not always remember) we pulled out one of our hymnals and sang a Christmas hymn together. We went through the songs in the order they were in the hymnal, and in this way we learned many new Christmas songs and enjoyed discussing more deeply the meanings of the lyrics to ones we have known all our lives. I gained a new appreciation for songs like It Came Upon A Midnight Clear after really pondering the meaning of the words instead of merely singing along.

My Daddy is very blessed to be able to (most years) take off the entire week between Christmas and the New Year from work. This year we had special plans for that week: demolition and remodeling. Before we even moved into this house, we had plans to do some remodeling. There was a huge built-in entertainment center in the living room that just had to come down sooner or later (we hoped sooner!). Mom termed it the "entertainment altar."

The carpet in the living room was also pretty old and dirty and we bought some wood flooring to replace it even before we moved. Oh, and the walls were in desperate need of a paint of coat. So, the day after Christmas we took down all the Christmas decorations and tackled our project. We had no idea how big it would turn out to be. We didn't finish until New Year's Day.

The first thing we did was pull up the carpet. And the first thing we noticed upon doing so was a large area of mold against the wall that backs up to the laundry room. Turns out we had a leak in the wall. That set us back a bit, but we were very thankful because had we not taken the carpet out we might not have noticed for weeks! While Daddy was fixing that, Mom and Isaac and I enjoyed writing all over the entertainment altar with crayons. Why not? We were tearing it out anyway! I had my fair share of disobedient and rebellious acts as a child, but writing on the walls was never one of them. This was my very first time and let me tell you, it was loads of fun. All in proper circumstances, of course. :)

Next step was the major demo portion of the project, tearing out the
entertainment center. Mom wanted to take a sledgehammer to it while
yelling, "TAWANDAAAA!", but Dad wouldn't let her. He and Isaac ended up
tearing the thing out bit by bit, two-by-four by two-by-four. It was a
messy business.
They got a little torn up themselves, as you can see.

Since I am neither very strong, nor extremely tough, I was set to work
taking screws and nails out of the two-by-fours. We filled an entire 2
quart half-n-half carton full of them. We joked that the carton was
appropriately labeled, since the contents were half screws and half
nails. :)

We spent most of our 6 days on redoing drywall and texture, and painting. It was Daddy's first time doing texture, and he did a remarkably wonderful job! Perhaps the worst part was that after the texture dried, Daddy had to sand it, and for the rest of the time we worked on the project everything in the house was covered in a thick layer of drywall dust. I don't even want to know how much drywall we inhaled in those few days. After all the painting was done and the walls were dry, Daddy and Isaac laid the wood flooring while we girls tried to cleanse the house of drywall powder.

Once that was finished, our project was completed! And now we are certainly enjoying the fruit of our labors.
to blogging. Oh well. Sometimes life happens and preempts plans, ya
know?

(FYI: I feel that I have a very many things to tell in this post, so forgive me if you find it a bit rambling.)

Did
you know that moving is not just a one day or even one week process?
In my experience, it takes more like two months. We are getting settled
though. And we are enjoying our new house so much. It seems
that every day we find new things to love about this house. One day
it's how beautiful the roses are, the next it's the maple tree in the
backyard. Other days we realize how much we like the layout of the
kitchen or the awesome pantry or the massive closet and storage
space. Some days we delight in simpler things, like how good it is to
feel warm carpet under our feet again, or how smaller bedrooms can
actually feel more cozy, or how the sunlight coming in the windows makes
the kitchen and living area feel so bright and cheery. Can you tell
how much we are enjoying this house?
Our
animals are getting somewhat settled as well. They are all in
temporary pens for now, but building goat shelters and a chicken coop
are high up on our priority list. The chicken coop is especially high
on our list, because we really are not getting many eggs from our
chickens right now since their laying situation is very much less than
ideal. Oh well. We're working on it. :) Our ducks, however, (who
finally started laying eggs shortly before we moved!) have been very
reliable in giving us two eggs a day--and so far, in the same exact
spot! Speaking of the ducks, I am loving them more and more every day.
Shortly after we moved, Mamma put their pond in the front yard, and now
every morning they waddle up to the house for their early morning bath
right outside the window. They are so much fun to watch (and hear).
Isaac
spent a very great part of our first week here mowing all our weeds.
Uncle Timmy was very kind to let us borrow his riding lawn mower. The
weeds were quite high, and we couldn't really tell what was out on the
property. After Isaac finished mowing, we were exceedingly surprised to
find many water spigots and sprinklers all over our 2 1/2 acres, many
of which the boys had to fix because of leaks and disrepair. Despite
all the work and trips to Home Depot to fix all the leaks, it was
overall a very pleasant surprise for us, since we had previously
believed there was only one water spigot on the whole property, besides
the ones on the house.

Now,
this little monster in the picture below is a lobber. I introduce you
to him because he is, perhaps, the worst thing about our new house.

As you can see, he is a type of grasshopper, only he is much bigger and
appears to wear some sort of heavy armor. His worst characteristics are
a tendency to jump towards you right when are walking past him, and the
positive look of malice he directs your way whenever you happen to be
in his proximity. But worse than all of this, is the fact that he is
not alone. There are literally hundreds of thousands of these creepy
guys everywhere on our property. They're in the weeds, they're
on the sidewalk, they're on the sides of the house and the screen doors,
they're in the rosebushes, and in the gravel. They are literally
everywhere. It sort of reminds me of a plague from Exodus. Truly, I am
not exaggerating here. We had lobbers at our old house, but I think
there are even more of them here if that can be possible. The good news
in all of this: our duckies LOVE the taste of lobbers! They certainly don't have any lack of them.

For perspective on the actual size of lobbers, I placed a nickel in the picture above.

We've
had some peculiar adventures since we moved here, but there is one that
was incident that was the most bizarre, and therefore warrants your
attention. The first time we used the oven here, my mom noticed a funny
smell. She thought that it smelled like a dead animal, but I thought it
was just her imagination. There had been a dead cow practically in our
backyard for two weeks right before we moved (it's a long story), so I
though she was just paranoid because of that. Well, it turned out I was
wrong and she was right. When we inspected the stove a couple of days
later. We found a nice little crispy treat waiting for us.

Yes
people, that is a DEAD FROG in our stove! (Sorry for the poor quality
of the pictures, but I couldn't resist showing you anyway.) I'm not
going to attempt to deny that that freaked me out a little. Okay, it
freaked me out a lot.

By
far, my most favorite thing about living here is being so close to my
Uncle Timmy, Aunt Kris, and cousin Mariah. Their house is just one mile
down the road from us, and that is such a blessing. I can't
even tell you how much I am enjoying that. Is there anything better
than being able to drive over to your best friend's house in less than
two minutes in your pj's and slippers for a movie and ice cream?
Hmmm... I don't think so.

Okay, I have just two more pieces of news to tell you-- and these are not really related to our new house at all. Firstly, I finally
got my driver license on Wednesday! Secondly, it's actually really
truly the season of fall now! Yesterday was probably our first day of
sweater and coat weather, and this morning it was 28 degrees outside. I
love the change of seasons, especially fall, but I have to say that I
am not looking forward to months of doing chores in below freezing
temperatures. On the other hand, I'm quite excited to start wearing
sweaters and scarves and long warm socks and boots again. Every season
comes with it's good and bad I guess.

Well, I guess that's all I have to tell at the moment. Ta ta for now!

The picture says it all, my friends! We have officially moved, and we are so relieved and blessed and thankful and happy and exhausted and joyful and excited and amazed and ecstatic and... shall I go on? Like all experiences that God gives us, this experience has been both a trial and a blessing. In the end of it all, I firmly believe that God has used it to teach us and grow us and to give us so many blessings which we do not deserve in any way!

I want to tell you a little bit of the details because God is so amazing, but it's pretty complicated so I'll try to make a long story short. One of the biggest trials in all of this took place in the last weeks before we moved when we found out that we were being rejected for the loan we were trying to get. This was a pretty serious complication, since we only had one week of escrow left and we had to apply for a whole new loan and get closed within 7 business days. Our escrow and loan people assured us that they would work very hard to close us on time, but as the week went on it became very apparent that there was a very good chance we would not close on time. Not closing on time would have meant having to pay the seller per day for not keeping our close date, having to postpone our move date, and having to beg our landlord to let us stay an extra week. Needless to say, we were all pretty on edge that week. A huge source of encouragement to my Mamma during this time was that "WE'VE MOVED" sign in the picture above. It was actually a flier sent out by a church in our area that moved locations. Mamma set it out in a visible place and every time she looked at it, she would think, "We've already moved! God's already moved us!" It turned out that she was right. On Thursday it looked like we were set to close on time (our set close date was the following day, Friday). Mamma and I were literally jumping up and down and praising God. We were that happy. On Friday (this was before the deal had officially closed) we went over to the new house and cleaned and painted fenced and got everything ready to move in. We found out later that while we were doing all of that, the deal almost fell through, but the real estate agents were able to get it worked out. Even up until the last minute, the deal was not secure but God worked it out just the way he wanted! We got a call from our agent on Friday at 4:19 p.m. that the deal had officially closed--with only 41 minutes to spare! God's ways are higher than our ways, are they not?

Moving day was such a blessing in and of itself! There were around 7 families that came to help us move, many of them driving over an hour and a half. Everyone worked so hard and so much got done that I am still amazed.
So, we are officially moved! I could go on and on about our new house now, but I think I'll save that for another post. For now, I'll just say that we are loving our house more and more every day, and we are overflowing with thankfulness at how good God has been to us! You can expect to hear all about it in the next few days.
To be honest, I haven't really had anything new or interesting to share. I could have written about every new development in our house-hunting adventure, but that whole situation was so frustrating and ever-changing that I didn't want to overwhelm and bore you. Now that the roller coaster has seemed to come to an end, however, I finally feel comfortable updating y'all on our status.

I am constantly amazed and awed at the way our Sovereign God works in our lives. It's never quite the way we expect it, but it is always perfect and good, even when we can't see it at the time. Trying to find a place to live this time around has really been a roller coaster ride. It was frustrating and it was difficult, but when it came down to the end, God did it that way to test us, to make us trust him more, to make us wait on him. And it was good. That doesn't necessarily mean that it was fun all along the way. It wasn't. But it was His plan, and even if I still couldn't see the ways in which he has used it for good, (and I do!) I could still know that it was perfect because He is perfect.

So what was His plan? Well, it's not completely over yet, but it looks like this is the house he has given us.

We are currently in escrow, and things have gone pretty smoothly thus far. We made it over the hump of the appraisal without any hangups, so it looks like we are on the home stretch! (You may remember that the appraisal was the thing that stopped the last house deal we tried to close.)
We are so excited and thankful to be getting this house. It's really a nice place with four bedrooms and a garage on two and a half acres. But the best part of all is that it is just one mile away from where my aunt and uncle and cousin (who just happens to be my best friend!) live. What a huge blessing that will be for our family! I'm not going to even try to describe how much I look forward to that!

Our close date is on or before September 28th, so we have planned the big move for the 29th. That gives us, let's see... only 23 days! Hmmm.... that's not very much time, is it? :)

I really can't wait. No, I'm not really looking forward to packing, moving, unpacking, and organizing all of our earthly possessions. I am, however, greatly looking forward to settling down in a new place and actually feeling like it's our home. There are many advantages to renting, (one of them being the reminder that we're just borrowing everything that we have on this earth and that this is not our true home) but it will be so nice to not have to worry about scratching the wall because it doesn't belong to you again.

So, that's the update! Again, sorry for delaying so long. I'll try not to keep the blog so silent in the future.

I've been enjoying monsoon storms! Ah... If you have never been in a desert summer storm, I pity you. It is truly one of the most beautiful things in the world, and there is nothing like it for displaying the power and majesty of God's creation!

I've been plugging away at my medical transcription course. It's going well, and I'm making some good progress, I do believe. It's tough at times though. Those doctors like to get three or four sentences out of their mouths in about 4 seconds. You can imagine that it comes out sounding like one big garbled word. I can't say that I blame them, but it certainly doesn't make the transciptionist's job any easier.

I've been squeezing in a book here and there on my Kindle. Most recently, I read Frank Peretti's newest novel, Illusion, and enjoyed it immensely. Definitely a great read. I couldn't put it down.

I've been making cheese! Well, actually, I only made cheese once. Isaac and I made mozzarella out of our goat milk one day. It was way too much fun, although a rather lengthy process. I wasn't super happy with the results; I thought the cheese had very little flavor, but it was mozzarella cheese and that was exciting! Just knowing that I can turn milk into a brick of cheese is exhilarating, I must say. Our next project will be feta. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

I've been following Food Network Star. This is so bad, but every time they start a new season our entire family gets totally hooked. We have a lot of fun watching and guessing at who is going to win. By the way, we guessed right this season! :)

I've been doing more chores than usual. This is due to my poor brother's being out of commission. Isaac sprained his ankle while on a run this week, and now he is confined to sitting or hobbling around on a pair of crutches. :( Consequently, I'm having to pick up the slack. Let me tell you, you sure appreciate everything a person does when they suddenly can't do anything and you have to do it all yourself! I feel much more sympathy for Isaac than I do for myself though. He's not used to being a couch potato all day, and I can only imagine how hard that must be for him. He is getting quite creative in ways to get around and do things while not putting any weight on his foot. As I type, he is mopping the floor from a rolling chair!

I've been house-hunting. (I can't believe I actually forgot to mention this one. I'm adding it now, two hours after I originally published this post. That's how long it took me to remember that I forgot it.) :) Mom and Dad decided to try to buy a house instead of renting, since rental rates are stupendous right now. We actually put an offer on a house, but let's just say that God is teaching us a big lesson of patience through that situation. It's been a roller coaster ride for sure. Anyway, the house-hunting business is highly overrated. I wish it could be as fun as they make it look on that show "House Hunters." I can assure you that, at least in my experience, it's not been that way. No sir. Nevertheless, God is in control! And that's the best thing about this business.

This time it wasn't actually our choice; the owners of the place we are currently in decided they want to move back in. Unfortunately, that means we have to move for the third time in two and a half years. Can you tell that I'm not exactly excited? :) Really though, I should be excited. It is obviously God's will that we move on to another place, so I ought to be expectant and excited to see where God is going to move us and what He is going to do in our lives. That's what my attitude should be, but although I know it, I don't always feel that way. You can pray for me!

We would also appreciate your prayers concerning finding a house and feeling clear direction from God. We are trying to find a place where we can keep our farm animals, but so far it's been rough. It is so good to know that God is in control! For now, we are continuing to look and (trying to!) wait patiently on the Lord to provide. Again, we would appreciate your prayers as we enter another transition time in our lives.

Sorry for the rather low-toned post. Here, I'll leave you with some pictures that my cousin Mariah recently took on the farm.

We sure have enjoyed this house and property for the time that God allowed us to live here. Job 1:21b "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."
Sorry; I really didn't feel like being creative so I figured I'd name this post the most obvious thing possible.

My graduation--it seems so strange to refer to this event as a thing in the past when all my life I've been looking forward to it as a thing in the future. It is, however, in the past, and that's why I'm here to tell you about it. So, without further ado, prepare yourself for one very long post...

I was so blessed to be a part of a very special graduation
ceremony sponsored by our homeschool group and also to graduate with my
precious cousin and best friend Mariah. (By the way, you may notice me
using the word "blessed" a lot during this post. You may, in fact,
think that I greatly over-use the word. I probably will. For just this
once, I'm going to set aside all composition etiquette and use that
word as much as I want because it is the best way to describe how I feel about everything that this graduation involved.)

The ceremony took place at the offices or second building of my cousin's church. We went early to set up and decorate.
God has given me such wonderful
parents! I am so thankful that they chose to homeschool me (and
stuck with it!), but even more importantly that they chose to train
me in Godliness, to teach me the Gospel, and to give me a foundation
in the Word of God. Also, they have both been amazing teachers and
Godly examples to me over the years. I am so thankful for my Mommy
and Daddy!

When the parents presented the diploma to the graduates, they had an opportunity to speak. My precious Daddy said many things which blessed me so much and caused us to share many laughs and a few tears. I'm not sure why we all have such somber faces in this picture. I was probably fighting back tears. :)

I can't imagine that anyone has ever drunk a glass of milk with as much relish as I did last Monday evening. Just FYI: That's relish as in "enjoyment, pleasure..." Don't worry; I don't put pickle relish in my milk. Ugh. Just the thought of that makes me feel a little sick. But to return. Last Monday's glass of milk was the happiest glass of milk of my life. Why? Because it was our fresh, raw goat milk. And for the very first time, it tasted wonderful.

Over the past few months we have been battling with the taste of the milk our Alpine goats have been producing. We researched "how to make goat milk taste good" on the internet, we got advice from friends, we switched to organic feed, and tried almost everything we could think of. Still the milk didn't taste right. Things began to get frustrating. We were milking two goats every day twice a day and accumulating gallons upon gallons of milk that was good for nothing. Eventually we started dumping the milk out onto the ground every day just to get rid of it. We began to wonder why we even had milk goats. Then, as a last resort, we tried two different things at once. 1) We started both our does on Molly's Herbal Worm Formula (we thought that our goats might be showing some signs of worms). 2) We started feeding our does yogurt twice a day. This was a recommendation of our good friends from Dallas Tyler Ranch. About five days after we made these changes, I decided to taste the milk. I tasted it. I tasted it again. Could it really be? Then I took it to each member of the family and we unanimously decided that the milk did indeed taste delicious (aka, exactly like cows milk)! We still don't know which of our changes made the milk taste better. To be honest, I don't much care! I was inexpressibly happy that night. Those who have not been in our situation may find it hard to understand, but when you have poured a tremendous amount of effort into the goats and into making their milk taste good and have been utterly unsuccessful for months, victory is a very sweet thing. And so, incidentally, is our goat milk now. That fact makes me a very happy camper.
Isaac got his permit on Thursday!
Already he is becoming a great driver. Whereas it took me months just to build up the courage to drive on a real road, Isaac drove us (on the very day he got his permit) to Pizza Hut to celebrate--and in our humongous truck nonetheless!
However, I have to start somewhere, so here goes.

Recently we got to celebrate my Daddy's birthday! His special day was on a Saturday, and we spent the day hanging out and enjoying our time at home.

One of Daddy's favorite hobbies is RC airplanes. He loves to fly them, but since it is very windy here most of the time, the only times he can fly are in the early mornings and evenings. On his birthday morning he ran outside to get a few minutes of flight in before breakfast.
During the course of the day we had a really fun time shooting balloons with our longbows! Unfortunately, we didn't get any pictures of that, but we sure had a blast!

It's tradition in our family that the birthday boy (or girl, whatever the case may be) gets to choose what we will have for dinner. Daddy chose pizza! Our family's favorite pizza to make is our green pizza (made with pesto, spinach, chicken, onions, artichoke hearts, and bell peppers, oh, and of course cheese!). YUM!
And finally, cheesecake for dessert with a movie! And no, my Daddy didn't turn 64 this year. We decided to play a little trick on him, and it worked! I laughed so hard when he finally realized that we had switched the numbers around and aged him 18 years!
It was exciting, but disappointing. It was expected, but unexpected. And we were unprepared. Very unprepared.

Let me explain.

I told you last week that Bess was due soon. And she was. However, we were expecting her to be overdue, because she really wasn't showing any signs of being close. We're not experts on goats yet (a fact which this whole experience so perfectly proves), and we were very foolishly expecting Bess to be a lot like Betty. Not that we thought Bess would be exactly like Betty, but we were using Betty as our standard since that was all we had ever experienced. Let's just say that Bess was very different.

Like I said, Bess had been showing pretty much zero signs of being anywhere near giving birth. Yesterday morning, Mom and I went shopping and left Isaac at home. It was around three in the afternoon, and we were almost home when we got a call from Isaac saying that he had gone out to check on the goats and found Bess with two babies! We had absolutely no idea that she would be kidding so soon, and we were all completely shocked. Oh, did I mention that she was two days earlier than her due date as well? There's not much more of the story to tell really. She had twins, a boy and a girl. We sure were happy that everything was okay and that she delivered just fine on her own, but I was disappointed to have missed the birth. I can't emphasize enough how surprised we were. I think I'm still kind of in shock over it all.

Okay, enough jabbering; I'm sure you want to see pictures of our two newest adorable babies!

We haven't named them yet. Isaac very kindly gave me the privilege of naming the little girl, but I haven't been able to think of one that seems fitting. Got any suggestions?
Mamma and Daddy went shopping by themselves last Saturday, and when they came back they had a very pleasant surprise for us! Ducklings on a buy-one-get-one-free sale? Really, who can pass that up?
These little guys are called Khaki Campbells. From what I understand, they are one of the best layers of all duck breeds. Apparently, and I didn't know this before, this breed of ducks lays an average of 300 eggs in a 365 day year. That is even more than a chicken!
I had never had ducks before Saturday, and I was naively unprepared for their behavior. I suppose I shouldn't have been expecting them to act like chicks, but somehow I was surprised when, instead of drinking water while standing outside of the dish, the little duckling plopped right down into the dish of water and began drinking! Silly me, ducks are ducks--not chickens! :)

P.S. I almost forgot to mention that I've finally reached my 100th post! Don't congratulate me. It only took me three and a half years to make it here.Kiahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08944143756628220236noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2222476484750477036.post-24262963401321590302012-04-15T16:33:00.000-07:002012-04-15T17:11:46.088-07:00ConfessionsConfession #1: I'm not always right. (Shocking, isn't it?) :) This will be seen in the following confessions.

Confession #2: Apparently, I was wrong when I said that spring was here. We had a large storm sweep through this weekend complete with snow, rain, wind, and much colder temperatures. It snowed on Friday night and most of Saturday, creating the overall effect of a wintry January day. Our wood stove, which I had previously thought was retired for the season, is back in business.

Confession#3: Remember when I said that I could think of about 1,000 things to make with our very own backyard eggs? I may have exaggerated just a little. Or quite a bit. Our hens have started to really kick into action, and since we have 29 of them, we're getting almost 2 dozen eggs every day. That's a lot of eggs, I can tell you. And now we're scrambling (Haha, did you like that?) to find ways to use them up!

Confession #4: Well, this isn't really a confession; I just didn't want to break the trend. I have a little bit of exciting news I wanted to tell you! Yesterday we finally got the baby goats on a schedule of bottle-feeding only two times a day, once at 6am and once at 6pm. That means Friday night was the first night in over a month that we haven't had to get up in the middle of the night to feed goats. (That's as long as you consider 4am the middle of the night, which I do.) Well, I should say the first night in over a month that Isaac didn't have to get up to feed goats. There were several nights that I didn't go with him. Anyway, that is so exciting for us! We get to enjoy this wonderful reprieve for almost a whole month before Bess gives birth, and then we have to start all over again. I'm not going to think about that quite yet though; I'm just going to enjoy the present!

Confession #5: I didn't have any pictures to go with this post. Sorry! Maybe next post...

Confession #6: The last confession made me think of this: I've been meaning to do a post for a long time with pictures of Isaac milking Betty, but I haven't gotten around to it. Maybe that will be my next post. Now don't hold me to that! I'm just saying it might be a possibility. :)
Today I'm posting about our newest adventure--Boer goats!

We got an opportunity last week to take two baby Boer (Boer is a meat
breed) goats for free. The people we got them from have over 300 Boer
goats that live on thousands of acres and live off of the land. Once in
a while during kidding season, the owners have to go through the herd
and make sure there are no little babies that are sickly or may not make
it in the wild. Last week they had found two of these--one buck who
was the runt of triplets, and one baby girl who was abandoned. They
both were very sickly and could not walk when they found them, so they
brought them to their house and began to take care of them. We got them
when they were approximately four days old. They both had several
different problems and we were not sure if they would make it or not.
They are doing much better now though, and we think that they will be
just fine.

This is S'more. He had a sore on his leg which I think he had rubbed raw by crawling. That is much better now, and out of the two, he is the healthier. He's the one you will see running and jumping around just like a little goat kid should. (By the way, S'more's eyes are not really blue; they were just reflecting that way in the picture.)

This is Bordeaux. She is still a little frail, but adorable nonetheless. She has a little raspy cough occasionally and one cloudy eye that it seems will simply not get better. We are afraid she might be blind in the one eye, but we are not sure.

These little guys are simply adorable. They are living in the house for now until they get a little stronger, and I think we've spoiled them because of it. But we can't help it! S'more simply loves to be held and cuddled, so much so that we call him the lap goat. He will cuddle right into your lap and either sleep or just rest, completely content. You can see the truth of this from the pictures below.

Bordeaux and S'more are not related, but they've lived together since the first or second day after they were born, so they are absolutely inseparable. If we let them out (which we do occasionally) and S'more realizes that Bordeaux has wandered off and he can't see her, he will start wailing and running around looking for her until he finds her. It is the cutest thing to see.
On a side note, I want to announce that spring is here! We are definitely having warmer weather and it would be lovely if only the wind would let us enjoy it! Unfortunately, the wind is unrelenting--at least for now. Hopefully it will let up enough for us to enjoy the beautiful spring time soon.
Betty gave birth to beautiful, healthy triplets today! Here's how it all went down:

It just so happened that both Mom and Dad left early this morning to go visit my Grandma who lives two hours away. Isaac and I stayed at home just in case Betty delivered. About 8:00 am Betty started showing some serious signs of impending labor. Isaac and I gathered all we needed, went out to be with her, and called Mom and Dad to let them know that Betty was going into labor. We thought we were going to go through the delivery by ourselves, but Mom and Dad surprised us about an hour later by showing up. They had decided to turn around and come home. That turned out to be a major blessing, as it would have been much more difficult had we been by ourselves.

Isaac did a terrific job through the whole labor. You would have thought he had done this hundreds of times! Betty too, was a trooper! This was her 4th freshening, and she did a great job through the whole thing.

By about 10:00 we knew for sure those babies were coming soon. Betty was losing a lot of fluids, pawing the ground, and lying down then standing up repeatedly. We didn't have to wait very long. At 11:00 there were two little hooves and one little black nose sticking out. At 11:05 the whole body followed and we found that Betty's first kid was a little girl! She was in perfect position, and Isaac just helped out a little by pulling on the feet as Betty pushed. Isaac named her Adah. I want to pause here for just a moment to say what a miracle this was to watch! It is such a wondrous thing to watch a life that God has created come into the world, even when it is just a little goat. I couldn't stop smiling through the whole delivery. It was just so amazing to see!

We were still cleaning up the first kid when Betty began having more contractions. This next one came out very quickly, so quickly in fact that Mom and Dad didn't even know she was having another one until it was delivered. This second kid, born at 11:22 was a buck, which Isaac named Apollos.
Now we were busy cleaning and drying the babies. We were all in awe at everything we had just seen. There is a technique called "bouncing" in which you can sort of feel if there are any more babies inside the doe. Isaac tried this on Betty and initially said that he thought he felt something in there and thought she might have another one. Time passed, however, and when Betty showed no signs of another kid coming, we decided that she was only having twins, which we were all completely fine with!

We had called some friends when Betty had first gone into labor and they decided to come over (and that's saying something since they live an hour and a half away!). They arrived about 20 minutes after the second kid was born. About this time, Isaac milked Betty out and then we bottle-fed the babies.
After at least an hour of being out there with the kids and Betty, we decided to head inside to get some food. Before the food was ready to eat, Isaac and Rylee and Trent (our friends) went out to check on the kids. When they got to the goat pen they received a surprise! There was a little hoof sticking out of Betty! Isaac realized that it was a back hoof and there was only one. This means that the baby was coming out backwards and had one leg bent back. He thought that he was going to have to reach inside Betty to help her, and he was concerned that the baby might be dead, because the hoof was cold and he didn't know how long it had been there. It only took a few pulls on that little hoof, however, and Betty's third kid came into this world, alive and well! This was at 1:35, about 2 hours after the second kid was born. I'm sure you can imagine how shocked and delighted we all were at the arrival of this third little kid! I still can't believe it.
When we began thinking of names several days ago, we had found several names that we liked. One of these, Tertius, meant "third" and so we decided that if we had a buck that was the third kid, we would name him that. Agrippa means "feet first" so we determined to name a buck that came out with his back feet first Agrippa. Betty's third kid qualified for both! Therefore, his name is Tertius Agrippa. :)
Yes, our days of waiting are over (at least until Bess is due!), but our days of waking up in the middle of the night to bottle feed kids have just begun! Fun, fun... :)
Betty is due to give birth any day now! Words cannot tell how excited we all are. We have many questions running through our minds right now. How many kids will there be? One? Two? Three? What will they look like? Will they be black like their mamma or brown and black like their papa? Will they be boys or girls? And the question that most often is in my mind: When will they come?! I must admit that I'm not very patient when it comes to waiting for something as exciting as this. Every time I go out to see Betty and check on her I find myself imploring her to "please have your babies right now!" And perhaps the worst part about it is that I can do nothing to hurry it up and neither can Betty. It is simply a waiting game, and one that I find very difficult.

Nevertheless, the birth must come eventually and we are all in a state of expectancy and excitement. You may expect to see pictures of adorable baby goats very soon!
With five votes, the names Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley overwhelmed the other three options and won their rightful place as belonging to our two roosters. Though my choice did not win, I certainly cannot say that I am unhappy with the results. :)
I want to say thank you to all those who participated in our little poll! We sure had fun.
These are our two roosters. I would introduce them to you, except that they don't have names yet. And that's a problem, at least in my mind. Names are very important to me and they always have been, even when their owners are only chickens (or stuffed animals). So, we need your help on this one. You see, we were trying to name them today and were having a bit of trouble. Each member of the family put out their suggestion, but we couldn't make up our minds.

Isaac's suggestion: Luther and Calvin (My immediate reaction to this one was, "Oh, please no." Isaac, however, loves the idea.)
My suggestion: Tertius and Felix (Names from the Bible)
Dad's suggestion: Tony and Ray (You can really only understand this one if you watch a show by Living Waters called On the Box, which we love.)
Mom's suggestion: Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley (If you know my mom, her suggestion doesn't surprise you a bit.)

After a bit of discussion, Isaac said, "I know! Kiah, you put a poll on your blog and let your readers decide." So that's what I'm doing. And now, if you would please vote on the poll to the right we would all be very indebted to you. We are placing the (oh so important!) decision of naming our roosters in your hands. None of us will vote, and we will name the roosters whichever set of names you choose. So, dear readers, please vote! Right now!
